Bangweulu – “where the water meets the sky”- is one of the world’s greatest wetland systems which comprise Lake Bangweulu, the Bangweulu Swamps and the Bangweulu Flats or floodplain. The Bangweulu wetlands is an area of a watery paradise with very unique vegetation, wildlife and birdlife. The Bangweulu system is fed by about seventeen rivers of which the Chambeshi (the source of the Congo River) is largest and is drained by the Luapula River.
The swamps and reed islands are popularly known as the home of the rare Shoebill Stork. Among the plenty waterbird population found in the area are the spur winged goose, sacred and glossy ibis, black crowned night heron, bee-eaters, fly-catchers and the saddle-billed stork. Adding to the beauty of the Bangweulu Swamp Game Management Area is the elegant and elusive black lechwe antelope dotting the wetlands.
The swamps can be visit all year round but during the rainy season all trips around the swamps are by boat. By June much of the floodplain is dry and becomes possibly to take walks from the camp.
